Having Had a Spiritual Awakening

Having Had a Spiritual Awakening from the Al-Anon Family Groups

Some of my favourite excerpts…

butterflies, and the story of their migration gives me a picture of a Higher Power in action. These fragile creatures make a journey of thousands of miles, but it takes four generations to complete the trip. No single butterfly ever flies the full route, yet somehow the species continues to pass on the pattern of its migration. If mere butterflies can be part of a pattern that they never fully know, I think the same may be true for me. I take heart in supposing that my life since Al-Anon has patterns in it that may extend beyond my understanding and that may contribute to a greater good than I can know.

From time to time I’ve heard others speak of a fairly reliable method for distinguishing between self-will and God’s will. The complicated and demanding plans for my day are the plans driven by self-will. The simple plans—the ones that sketch a few important activities and leave time for flexibility, frailty, and also some fun—are the plans that reflect God’s will.

To the Powers in the Universe Greater than Myself… Help me to keep an open mind, to be flexible with what life brings so that I may see the opportunities along life’s path, to let go and let the unplanned unfold with its untold possibilities for self-realization and growth. Help me to enjoy each day with a measure of comfort, serenity, and a sense of achievement. Help me to live with gratitude for what I have, rather than yearning for what I don’t have, so that in each day I may find contentment.

Help me to keep the focus on myself, to know that focusing on anything else keeps me in denial and doesn’t allow others the same dignity and respect I want myself. Help me to find the willingness to make amends and to take a personal inventory on a daily basis so that I may live without the burden of resentment and guilt that keeps me from living with joy and serenity. Help me to understand and accept, as these are the keys to my serenity. I open myself to a Power greater than myself.

A friend once said, “Religion is for those who are afraid of going to hell and spirituality is for those who have already been there.”

group I felt a presence that was greater than that of the separate individuals, a gentle presence that spoke of the spiritual and inspired me to treat others with dignity, respect, and love.

I sometimes try composing a gratitude list starting with A and going as far toward Z as I can progress before I fall asleep. I first read about this practice in As We Understood…, shortly after hearing it described in meetings. Over the years it has served me well. Often I’ll detour at a particular letter and find myself giving thanks for apples and alexandrites, apothecaries and astronauts, ants and anchovies, or bottles and bakeries, bumblebees and blueberries, bathtubs and brushes.
